No, Cinco de Mayo does not commemorate Mexican Independence from Spain as that was September 15, 1810. It is to celebrate our Mexican brethren for the fending off the French when their army was so grossly outnumbered. This date marks the day of their big battle.
Although I do find it funny that those who love to find ANY reason to drink use Cinco de Mayo as a scapegoat and have no idea what it is... Therefore, here was your CliffNotes version of a history lesson. So go, my margarita connoisseurs, and belittle people at bars tonight with this tidbit of info ;)
